July Installment COVID-19 Tax Relief Programs

Dear Taxpayer,

Governor Lamont has issued Executive Orders 7S, section 6 and 7W, sections 1(a) and 1(b), both of which create programs to provide relief from real estate, personal property, motor vehicle, sewer, and fire.  The Brooklyn Board of Selectmen have adopted both programs (Low Interest Rate Program [Completed] and Deferment Program) that are created by the Executive Orders.

Deferment Program: This program is giving an extended grace period of 3 months (instead of the usual 1 month) to pay without interest.  This means the July installments of real estate*, personal property, motor vehicles, sewer*, and fire* that would typically be due on August 3rd, has an extended grace period to October 1, 2020, meaning you have until October 1, 2020 to pay the July installments without interest.  As of October 2, 2020, the July installments will calculate interest back to July 1, 2020 at 1.5% per month (6%).

Please keep in mind that if you defer July payments, the October installment can not be deferred and will be due by Monday, November 2, 2020.

*Please note that the Deferment Program is not available for those taxes that are escrowed.  Please contact your mortgage company if you need help with your mortgage.

Landlord Eligibility for Both Programs (Applications are required): Landlords must meet eligibility requirements to participate in either program. The requirements are found on the enclosed application forms. Fully complete landlord applications must be received by the Tax Collector’s office on or before July 1, 2020 to be considered for the program. This letter does not create a right to participate or set the terms for participation in either program. It has been sent to you for informational purposes only.

If you have any questions, please contact the Tax Office at 860-779-3411, opt. 5.
