This contest is open to any Brooklyn resident decorating/lighting a residential property. Be as traditional or creative as you like! Forms must be submitted to the Parks & Recreation Office by the morning of December 13th to be entered in this contest. Winners will be contacted after judging takes place during the week of December 13th – 17th. Contest forms are available at the Recreation Office or online at www.brooklynct.org. Prizes for top entries will be awarded.

We are also challenging our local businesses to show your holiday spirit too! Top entries will be listed online and our Facebook page, receive a Winner’s Congratulation Certificate to hang in your establishment….but mostly you take away bragging rights for the year! Help make our holiday season a more festive one for all our residents and visitors to our little town!

Brooklyn Parks & Recreation will be accepting donations for our annual Toys for Giving Toy Drive beginning November 1st. New, unwrapped toys or other suitable gifts may be dropped off at the Recreation Office or the Town Hall. Cash donations are welcome. Make checks payable to Brooklyn Parks & Recreation. With many families finding themselves in financial need again this year, we are anticipating a large request for assistance. Donations are ongoing throughout the season, but are needed by December 13th, to be used for this year's program. All items collected will benefit Brooklyn children who are in need of assistance.

Children wishing to receive a letter from Santa may reach him by sending a letter beginning

November 1st with their name and return address to:

 Santa c/o Santa's Elves

29 Canterbury Road, Brooklyn, CT 06234

All letters must be received at the above address by December 6th, so Santa has time to write back!

Holiday Coloring Contest - Please note: when printing from home, choose Landscape as the printing option. These coloring pages are saved in pdf form and some printers will not choose landscape, even though the coloring pages are formatted to be landscape.

Brooklyn Post Office and the Recreation Department present this Holiday Coloring Contest during the month of December. Two age groups: Ages 6 and under or 7-12 years old. Pick up a coloring page from the Brooklyn Post Office, Brooklyn Parks & Recreation office or online at www.brooklynct.org and get creative! Please include your child’s name, age and contact number on the BACK of the coloring pages. Coloring pages are available beginning November 22nd and should be dropped off at the Brooklyn Post Office by Saturday, December 11th. Judging will take place before December 25th. Winners will be contacted, and prizes are awarded for top entries!

The Knights of Columbus will once again hold their annual Coat Drive at the Clifford B. Green Building’s Community Meeting Room. (This is the same building our Parks & Recreation Dept is located in.) This Coat Drive is held on Friday, November 26th from 9:00am-noon. More info about this drive will be located on our website as the date gets closer. PARKS & REC DOES NOT HANDLE OR PRESENT THIS COAT DRIVE. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS WILL BE IN CHARGE OF THIS PROGRAM AND ARE THE ONES WITH MORE INFO CONCERNING IT. We will not have details until they release a flyer to us, later this fall. We will post this flyer on our website and Facebook page, when it becomes available.

This project is still ongoing… we just have not received enough recipes to complete this book. We are still looking for your most beloved family recipes, to include in a Park and Recreation cookbook. Once completed we hope to offer them at a nominal fee, with proceeds going towards our Jim Boyle Campership Fund. We will be collecting recipes and creating a simple, printed in-house recipe book.

But we need your help…

Please email us your family favorite recipe/s. We need all recipes sent to us at j.lohbusch@brooklynct.org, in a word document, so we can format after receiving them. We are hoping to highlight Brooklyn residents and their families in our department cookbook. Thanks so much for your support!

This is a fun way to get the family involved in a community activity and then share the finished project with friends and family. A sample format is available on our department website.

After a year without Spooky Nights, we are returning with a new, and equally bone-chilling event – FEARGROUNDS! This event will be held on Friday, October 15th and Saturday, October 16th, at the Brooklyn Fairgrounds. Come join us for some chills and thrills this fall, as we introduce you to 2 Haunted Houses! Visitors will be guided on a walk to the first “house” and after surviving that ghostly visit will continue on to the next house, even bigger and scarier!

Afterwards, enjoy some time near the bonfire and visit one of our food vendors for a snack or drink to recover from your spine-tingling time inside the haunted house. Listen to the DJ and check out our nightly entertainers.

And don’t forget to purchase a t-shirt, after you survive FEARGROUNDS!

Price for entry into FEARGROUNDS will be $10.00 per person. Purchase yours at Hurme TV & Appliance, Danielson Surplus, Hank's Restaurant, WINY Radio and our office. Cash only at all ticket venues except our office. Our office can accept checks and credit/debit cards. (2.5% service fee for card transactions is accessed by processing company) CASH only at gate and at our office beginning October 11th.

Fairgrounds open at 5:00pm each evening for ticket sales. Bonfire area and vendors open at 5:00pm. Guided walks to the Haunted Houses will begin at 6:00pm. You must enter at the corral area/ticket area only, for the Haunted Houses. If you visit the bonfire area/vendors prior to your trip to the Haunted Houses, you will return to the ticket booth area to get into line. Ticket sales and gates will close at 9:00pm.  FEARGROUNDS will close to all, after the last “tour” finishes the haunted houses. $5.00 bonfire area entrance fee also available. NO one will be allowed into either “house” without a ticket.  Tickets are limited to 2000 per night, to experience the Haunted House FEARGROUNDS Encounter!

Both houses will contain traditional Halloween themed scenes and characters and may not be suitable for some children. Please use your discretion when purchasing tickets. No refunds are given for purchased tickets.
